Catch me if you can!

My initial response to being tagged again - this time by my longstanding blogging friend Ignorminious, was "Not AGAIN"! I was never very good a playing tag in the playground. I wasn't a fast runner, and I always seemed to turn round at the wrong moment and get tagged again very quickly. The fear lives with me!

Ignorminious however, is a longstanding blogging friend in that he has followed my blog from the very long beginning of almost seven months ago. He does me the great service of making sure that however bad he might think my ramblings are, he comments positively anyway. Which is good, because we bloggers need constant reassurance. Just when, for instance, you think you have written a stonkingly funny blog, you get maybe three responses, and then you have one of those "OH NO, I AM NOT FUNNY" moments. Or something....

Anyway.......

Ig asked me to reveal seven things about me which you don't know..........

I think that as I reveal many of these, you will probably say: "Yes we know that Sally, just from the way you write and from what you write."

But, one of you might not, especially if you are new today. So here they are:

1. I did a drama course at University and while there was a member of many dramatic societies. I was also a fairly insignificant member of quite a prestigious comedy group. One of the people in the same group - who was also on my course - told me one day that I wasn't funny........ That has stuck with me for 20 years, and even though people laugh at me now, I still have serious doubts.

2. An editor of a newspaper locally to here also said that I wasn't funny, and that I should write, but not to try to be funny. She then moved off that paper, to another one in the same group and the subsequent editor employed me to write some columns. Like my blog I used to put in what I thought were funny snippets about the family, and people used to laugh - they told me. BUT I STILL HAD DOUBTS MYSELF!

3. I shared a 21st party with someone I hardly knew, just because he had a birthday six days before mine. I married him three years and three months later.

4. When at university I went through a phase of falling for "sensitive souls"......... Each time I set myself up for a disappointment, because they all turned out to be gay.......

Fortunately, the person who I had shared a 21st party with eventually asked me out...

5. I was born three weeks prematurely and have spent the rest of my life making up for it. By the time I get to fifty I should hopefully start being early for things more often.

6. Despite the bravado. I'm very insecure! I have "mug" written all over my forehead. If you want someone to organise a Tupperware party on top of Mount Snowdon for five thousand people, in the middle of the night, ask me.

7. I hate toys with five thousand tiny pieces in them. I think that they have been designed by someone who hated their mother, hasn't got children and wants revenge on all the mothers of the world.

I would like to tag someone who doesn't currently comment on my blog, but who reads me! Now I know that there are people out there who are doing just that, from the numbers of people who visit me, but I can't tell who you are .......because you don't leave any clues. So go on! Be brave. Take the plunge. Admit your presence, comment and respond!!

Sally's too modest to say "Cambridge Footlights" (thing-about-me no. 1), but I don't mind basking in reflected glory!

Now hubby has dished the dirt you must tell us who the person was who told you that you weren't funny. Go on spill the beans.

I love the way you met hubby.

There's no need for you to be insecure as you are funny and bright and extremely well written so keep up the good work.

I take it you like the number 5000. Why?

sally, enidd knows exactly what you mean about the "not funny" thing. you should never tell someone they're something, especially as a child, because it sticks forever, even if it's not true - which IT MOST CERTAINLY ISN'T in this case.

look, enidd even did capitals for you, that's how much she believes it. don't let someone else decide who you should be. enidd does it all the time, and it's not good.

and she'll even forgive you for being a light blue.

Beccy - Thank you. There were some people who have become famous since, amongst that set, most famously probably is Nick Hancock, but the person who said that I wasn't funny didn't become famous. (Well not yet anyhow!)
John - Funny that. I've no idea why I said it twice. Perhaps it's an omen. The only problem is that the lottery doesn't include the number 5000.
Enidd - THANK YOU (caps too!) And thank you for the forgiveness too and to your lot for letting us win on the Thames (or is it the Tems?) this year too.

Sally, I just got off the phone with a friend of mine who's stuck on Mount Swindon! They've got plenty of food, drink and warm clothes but they are fresh out of Tupperware. Reckon you could help?

Seriously though, has it been 7 months already? The time has flown by! Despite what you think you are a funny writter and your blogs are of a consistently high standard.

I've been led to believe that very few funny people actually believe themselves to be funny, especially professional comedians. Guess it isn't just you and I :)

Good post!

' footlights' there must be some good stories you can tell us!!
Well we all think you write in an amusing and clever way so don't feel insecure about what a couple of prats said all those years ago.

Sally love,
What the hell is a tag? By the way, I think of you as my friend. Hope that's ok and not scary!

Hello orange Monsoon and welcome!! And great first blog!

Ig - no problem. When do they need me there?

Thanks for your very kind comments!

Chris - Thank you!! You put it into perspective for me.

Alice - No, not silly! I am honoured - thank you! I think of you and all my blog friends as friends. To be honest I think I am more open in Blogland than I am anywhere else, and ironically, in a strange sort of way, I think you all know me better.
p.s. A tag, is when someone writes a post like this, because they have been nominated to by someone else. So Ignorminious asked me to write this one, and he was asked to by MR. X. if you go on to Enidds blog, you will see that she too has answered this tag, and she was nominated by Mr. X!

And I bet you would be able to pull that Tupperware party off as well. Just be glad it's not Ann Summers.

I can't remember if I ever left a comment but either way, officially delurking.

Having been told by certain members of my family (not immediate family) as a child that my playing instruments and singing was not rubbish, I still have that in my head. Twenty years of performance including three years of teaching music myself has not properly dispelled this. I don't know why people feel the need to say these things when they are so obviously wrong.

Anonymous said...

Sally, I read you and have a link to you on my blog but rarely comment ... just like the stories of family life! Not sure I am experienced enough to understand the 'tag' thing ...

sallywrites said...

Hello Laura and welcome!

Hi Slimmer! i don't know why they feel the need to say these things either.

Hi Belle! I have no link to you....so I can't see your blog. If you put the URL on a message, I'll come and see your blog! Thanks for linking to me though!!

Number 3 reminded me of my own situation. In 1973, I had recently moved from Montreal to Paris and was working with two British expats. One was having a party and persuaded me to come (I didn't like parties and was very reluctant). A friend of his was working for British Airways and had gone to Paris for the weekend. She found me from across the room, arranged to meet, and after several more weekend visits I moved to the UK. We were married for the best part of 30 years until she became ill and died. So parties do have their use after all (and good luck to Ig). BTW, she was from Cheltenham.
Sorry for the late comment, but work has been getting in the way of my reading blogs!

What a lovely story Pierre - but sad too. I know that I have said it before, but you really should write all these things in a blog.

Hi again Sally. Thank you for the words of encouragement. Although I occasionally find interesting stories to insert in comments, I don't feel I have enough ideas to make an interesting blog. I think it was Clare who was pointing out recently that it is a lot easier to write comments on someone else's blog than to write new posts of your own.
So you do very well coming up with all this excellent material all the time. (This is turning into a long comment, but I have purposely written it in a place where fewer people are likely to look.)
I was looking at the archives during the week and found your New Year's resolutions (and I knew what SAY meant as well). Have you managed to get started on your book writing?
Having bought little.red.boat a birthday present (through the Amazon wishlist), I would have liked to do the same for you. Have you looked into that possibility?

sallywrites said...

Hi Pierre

No - not yet as such. I ahve written a short story - for the children,a dn I may add to that with a series of them. I have got lots of ideas for books, and to be honest, one of my reasons for giving up the radio show is to write more. If I got a job as a braodacster, that would be different, as it would mean that I wouldn't do my other job - so could still write more, if you get the gist....

I will do it though!! Thank you for the kind birthday thoughts too! x
